The Codex, by Douglas Preston

A departure from my standard fare of fantasy/sci fi, The Codex is an adventure/thriller paperback I just picked up without any real thought from the paperback section of the library. The basic idea is that a renowned tomb-raider decides to bury himself with all his wealth (about $500 mil in artifacts, artwork). In order for his 3 sons to inherit any of it, they have to find it first - somewhere in the depths of Honduras (interestingly - Honduras means depths in Spanish!). Unfortunately for them, they are not the only ones looking.

It's a pretty fast paced adventure - perfect for reading on the beach or on holiday. It's the kind of book that doesn't demand much of you, and is best if you don't demand much of it :-).

The codex in question is a Mayan codex purported to contain a wealth of Mayan medical knowledge - and there is a bit of cool archaeological/anthropological stuff which makes a pleasant combination with the rest of the story.

Another 7.5 on the Jason scale.
